What Is Average, and What Is Mean?
"Average" and "mean" are two names for the same thing. Both point to the one number that best represents a whole group of numbers — a single value that sums up what's "typical" for the data set.
How to Find the Mean
- Count how many values are in the data set.
- Add every value together to get the total.
- Divide that total by the count.
The Formula
Mean = Sum of all values ÷ Count of values
Worked Example
Data set: 9, 10, 12, 13, 13, 13, 15, 15, 16, 16, 18, 22, 23, 24, 24, 25
Count = 16
Sum = 268
Average = 268 ÷ 16 = 16.75
A Quick Note on Outliers
The mean can be pulled around by a handful of unusually high or low numbers. If a data set has an extreme outlier — say, one salary of $2 million dragged into a list of typical $50,000 salaries — the mean stops representing anyone realistically. The median (the middle value once everything is sorted) often gives a fairer picture in those cases.
